Gate installation in Killeen, TX

The gate is the part of the fence you touch every day. It is also the part that fails first when the posts move.

Minimum widths and what the city says

Killeen's fence checklist requires gates to be at least 3 feet wide. That is a floor, and it is narrow if you push a wheelbarrow, a mower or a trash cart through it. Many owners ask for a 4-foot walk gate for that reason. If a vehicle or a trailer will pass, you are into drive-gate territory, which means wider openings, heavier posts and hardware that can take the weight.

A gate sits in the fence line, so the fence's height caps are the ones to plan around. In a Killeen front yard the checklist caps privacy and chain-link fences at 4 feet. In Harker Heights, code summaries say fences and gates within the 25-foot front setback are limited to 4 feet (city code).

Why gates sag

The most common gate complaint is a gate that drags or will not latch. The cause is rarely the gate itself. A gate hangs from a post, and when that post leans, the gate leans with it. In a clay soil that moves, as the Texas soil sheet describes, a post that held a gate square last year can tilt this year. The fixes are heavier posts, deeper footings, and bracing that stops the gate from pulling the post toward the swing side.

When you get a quote, ask:

  • What size are the gate posts compared with the line posts?
  • Is the gate framed with a diagonal brace, or is it a plain frame?
  • What hinges and latch will be used, and can the latch be adjusted later?
  • Is there a drop rod and stop on a double gate?

Corner lots and sightlines

If your gate or driveway is near a street corner, the city's checklist office-use block includes a 35-foot visibility triangle (section 31-857), so fences and gates there get extra attention. Copperas Cove's guide also says no fence may sit in its clear visibility triangle and limits front and exterior-side fences to 36 inches with 50 percent transparency, which affects gate style on corner lots in that city.

Permits for gates

A gate is part of the fence. If you are adding a gate to a new fence, it belongs in the permit drawing for that fence. Adding a gate to an existing fence can be a change that should be confirmed with the city, because Killeen's permit list includes changes in the original material and fences over 24 inches. Ask your pro, and have them confirm with Building Inspections.

Automatic openers and HOA rules

Powered drive gates add electrical work, safety devices and, often, HOA review. Texas has statutory rules on what a property owners' association can do about perimeter fences and security measures (see Property Code Chapter 202 and this property-manager summary), but covenant details vary. Check the HOA documents before you spend money on a gate operator.

Repairing instead of replacing

If the gate is sound and the post moved, resetting the post can fix it. If the frame has racked, rebuilding the gate is usually cleaner. For the post side of the problem, see the repair page.

Sizing a drive gate

Measure the widest thing that will ever go through: the mower, a trailer, a delivery truck. Then ask the pro to size the opening with room to swing. A double gate with a center stop is the usual answer for wide openings, and the weight is why gate-post size matters. If the gate will open toward a street or sidewalk, check where the swing lands before you build.

Hardware and heat

July highs near 95 degrees in Killeen (climate estimate) expand metal and warp wood, and gates move more than fixed fence sections because they are hinged on one side. Ask for exterior-rated hinges and a latch that can be adjusted after the gate settles. Galvanized or coated hardware stands up better to Texas weather than bare steel.

Sightlines at the driveway

Where a gated driveway meets a corner, Section 28-241 defines the 35-foot visibility triangle and bars view obstructions over 2 feet tall inside it. A solid gate close to the street may be affected. Show the gate on the permit drawing and ask the pro to check it against the city rule.
